DRAFTING W/ NICKY CAMPBELL
This newsletter is a paid partnership with eBay.
Nicky Campbell has become the internet’s watchdog for celebrity style, often referred to as the “Joan Rivers of TikTok.”
You’ve likely seen him stumble onto your FYP, rating red carpet looks with a surprising level of candidness and honesty. But behind the virality is a career inside fashion that spans years — from Thom Browne to Vogue to the CFDA. He knows what he’s talking about, and that’s why his takes land the way they do. Kris Jenner follows him. He styles Mark Ronson. TIME put him on their inaugural 100 Creators list. The industry he came up in is now watching him back.
What most people don’t know is that behind the commentary is a wardrobe that reads like a love letter to fashion. Pieces from designers Campbell’s championed since the beginning, things he hunted down for months, a cardigan he wore to fashion week, a shirt he’s worn every Pride. Each one has a story — and now, he’s ready to pass them on.
eBay and DRAFTING have teamed up for a stoop sale curated from Campbell’s personal archive, featuring some seriously good names: Christopher John Rogers, Bottega Veneta, Thom Browne and more. “I’m an eBay girl,” he says. “I have been since a very young age.”
You can shop the sale IRL this Saturday, June 6 from 12:30–4 PM at 135 Watts Street. Can’t make it? You can shop the sale on eBay. Below, Campbell walks us through the pieces he’s selling and why — in his words — they deserve a new home.
This was in my early days working at the CFDA. I remember one of my colleagues was like, "You have to go see this new designer, Christopher John Rogers.” I went and ended up being amazed. I’ve always followed him and supported him in his career, and he's become a dear friend. There are so many things I've wanted, bought and owned from his collections, and this is one of the early pieces. I've worn it on Pride, because obviously it's very gay, and it's a stunning piece. I love Christopher, I love this piece, I love everything he does. He's fun because he plays with color. I'm a little more subtle these days, but this is a really fab shirt.
This was one of those holy grail pieces that I was obsessed with tracking down, and somehow I finally sourced it after months. I just loved it on the runway and I loved seeing it on everybody. I was deeply obsessed — so much so that I just wanted to own it. But it doesn’t really look good on me. I did wear it on an episode of Gloves Off that I filmed with Antoni [Porowski], so I got my moment. I wore it out a few times, I’ve got the shots, but honestly, it needs a new home and a new life. It’s an amazing statement piece, it’s fierce and I love it.
I first learned about this brand because my first internship in fashion was at a PR agency and we used to rep them. I became obsessed with the brand and owning pieces from it, and then I found this white coat, which is fabulous. I used to wear it all the time, but it is now too small for me, unfortunately. I do strongly believe that everybody should own a white coat — I think they are incredibly chic. There's something so chic about winter white to me, it's an underrated winter essential.
I used to work for Thom Browne, and one of the funny things about working there is that they make you dress up like a little mascot every day in what they call “the uniform.” This was part of my uniform, it’s the essential gray cardigan. I wore it all the time and I have a million things from them. I love them so much, but this piece is really fabulous. It’s cashmere, it has the signature four-bar stripe, and it has lived with me through a lot of crazy events and times there. I wore it to the office and I also wore it to the fashion show in Paris.
I love Ralph Lauren, an iconic American brand I’ve always admired. I’ve had the chance to wear them a few times on red carpets and work with them, and I always feel so classic and tailored. I know somebody will give them a second life through eBay.
