DRAFTING W/ TOWA BIRD
Towa Bird has a theory about Gentleman. “The boys want to be the gentleman and the girls want to be with the gentleman,” she says — and on her second studio album, the queer British artist plays that tension from every angle, channeling Riot Grrrl attitude through a glossy power-pop lens. The record even features Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill.
The follow-up to her 2024 debut American Hero isn’t about a persona, Towa insists — it’s a “cultural lifestyle.” She describes the shift from her first album as going from a pub to a cocktail bar, a white tank to a double-breasted suit.
On the heels of this week’s tour announcement, Towa breaks down how Gentleman came together for DRAFTING — from abandoned ideas to the lyrics that didn’t make the cut.
No one really knows how granola I am. Unfortunately, I love working out so much. This was me at a hotel in Brooklyn — February, 2025, just starting to write the album.
Patrick [Wimberly] making me sound like a little duck on “Don’t Wanna Hear About It.” (We did not keep this.)
This is where I record my guitar videos — ring light, scary!
Woke up like dis <3
Explains itself really.
If I wasn’t a pick me before, now I own wired headphones.
Leftover lyrics from “Victoria,” which we never put in the song.
